This page features a collection of photographs of different areas of the village.

Main street

A view of main street looking north towards the church. Circa 1910.

On the right is the Hare and Hounds pub, next is Ferndale house, then the Bakery. This building was altered later and the road widened.

The village bench can be seen on the left beyond the female figure.

There is no pavement on the right hand side and the footpath on the left looks little better than the narrow path of today, though the road level (no tarmac) is lower than todays.

Notes on the back of the print says that the picture was taken in the 1920's.

Manor House Wall, Gauls Lane

The Manor House entrance opposite Ringstead Road was blocked off in the 1920s and the village bench which had been further up Main Street was moved to this location.

The entrance was re-instated in the 1990s.

The lane leading into the countryside is named as Gauls Lane on earlier maps.

The bench has vanished.

In the background are the ruins of the cottages that used to stand on the corner of Ringstead Road and Main Street. Behind the cottages is Manor Farm.

Chapel Close and Lower Street

Photograph of Chapel Close and Lower Street, circa 1990.

Chapel Close was built on the site of the outbuildings of Manor Farm and the Old Board Room, a former village hall and chapel built by James Rennie Wilkinson around 1870.

Lower Street

A view towards Lower Street from Ringstead Road before the modern houses were built, but after Manor Close was built.

Manor Farm is on the right hand side of the picture.

Brecon House, Bank House and Fern Cottage can be seen in Lower Street.

The Board Room, a former village hall and chapel built by James Rennie Wilkinson circa 1871 is on the far right.

On the left are Tea Tree Cottage, Leopard House (then a pub), Old Stones, and Fern Cottage..

Outside Leopard House stands a bike.

The pedestrian steps from the bank to the road are clearly seen outside Leopard House. They are still there, though overgrown and poorly maintained.

Manor Farm is top right.

Burfield house, a modern development, stand on the right on the corner of Chapel Close, the site of the demolished Manor Farm outbuildings.

On the left are Leopard House then a B&B run by Cyril and Sylvia Kelly, Old Stones, and Fern Cottage.

The pedestrian steps from the bank to the road are clearly seen outside Leopard House, now with hand rails.

Lower Street

Note how high the ground level was as compared to the road level.

In the foreground of the image is the Memoria Hall, with Ivy Cottage, and Rectory Cottage. The ruined barn in the centre left is the old wheelwrights workshop.

Carlers Farm outbuildings can be seen in the centre.

Beyond are the houses in Ringstead Road.

Brightwells Lake and the river Nene are at the top of the picture.
